Which products should I use with my foam cornice?

Our cornice products are manufactured from XPS, a high-density foam which is used primarily as insulation material in Australian construction, due to it's superior thermal properties.

The compostition and light weight of the material means that it is not installed with the same products as standard plaster cornice, and also has specific requirements in terms of the paints and adhesives that can be used.

Below are compatibility tables which clearly indicate which products can and can't be used with our cornice.

Compatibility – XPS Cornice

Adhesive

Water-based, solvent-free; specifically formulated for lightweight cornice/XPS

Soudal Strong As Nails Super Grab (Water Based); Selleys Liquid Nails Fast Grab (Water Based); Parfix No More Nails (Water Based)

Filler

Acrylic gap filler or lightweight joint compound; flexible and sandable

SoudalSpakFilla Rapid; Nordsjo Light & Smooth Super Filler

Paint

Water-based acrylic, low-VOC; suitable for priming & finishing; Water-based primer / undercoat / sealer; Water-based Enamel XPS

Dulux Ceiling White (Water Based); Taubmans Easycoat; British Paints H2O Enamel

Not Recommended – XPS Cornice

Adhesive

Solvent-based construction adhesives or contact cements; expanding foams

Solvents can attack/melt XPS; foams expand and can distort the cornice profile

Filler

Hard-setting plaster fillers or cement-based compounds, Silicone

Too rigid; prone to cracking at joins and may not bond well to XPS, Silicone is not paintable

Paint

Oil-based enamels; solvent-borne primers/sealers

Solvent content can degrade the XPS surface, causing bubbling or melting
